AREAS throughout the Klang Valley are reportedly experiencing power outages today (July 27) with confirmed areas including Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Bangsar, Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway.
Malaysians have taken to social media to complain about the blackout which came amid heavy rain, with some netizens mentioning that several places in Pahang, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Penang and Johor experiencing the same.
In a statement on its official Facebook account, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said that it is aware of the blackouts and that its technical team is currently identifying the cause.
“There has been a disruption in the electricity supply in several areas. Our technical team is currently identifying the cause and we are working to restore the power supply. We apologise for any difficulties experienced by our users due to this disruption,” it said.
The blackout has also affected several shopping malls in the Klang Valley.
Twitter user @adiburhan took a short video showing a darkened Sunway Pyramid. In a follow-up tweet 18 minutes later he noted that power was restored, amid the crowd’s cheers.

Meanwhile, user @guan130300_lee commented that the country is currently having Earth Hour.

Echoing his sentiment, user @jaiyakandan95 tweeted:
I guess you’re just going green with the #Blackout now. Plus point, that’s it’s a cold rainy weather. Good to sleep.

Meanwhile, some users are taking the situation lightly by posting some joking comments.
In a more serious tone, user @kelvinlym teased that the blackout is a trial run to rig the upcoming 15th general election.
User @LJ_VanHuizen posted that the blackout might be the result of the Government cutting corners on costs by cutting the power instead of cutting the salaries of government officials.
TNB’s response
In an updated statement by TNB in its Facebook page, it acknowledged that there have been power disruptions since earlier this afternoon, involving 10% of the nation’s electricity usage.
Among some of the areas that have been identified of experiencing these disruptions are Petaling Jaya, Cheras, Bangi, Bayan Lepas, Seberang Jaya, Panchor and Bandar Indera Mahkota.
However, according to TNB, the power has been restored within 20 to 40 minutes since the disruptions first began for every other affected areas apart from Klang Valley.
The source of the disruption is currently being investigated in efforts to restore a stable supply of power. – July 27, 2022
