Malaysia to be probed for aluminium foil dumping in India, says report

MALAYSIA is among four countries being investigated by Indian authorities over the alleged dumping of aluminium foil after complaints by domestic manufacturers, reports The Hindu.

Hindalco Industries, Raviraj Foils and Jindal India filed an application to the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the commerce ministry’s investigation arm. They want the DGTR to launch an anti-dumping investigation on imports of “aluminium foil 80 micron and below” from Malaysia as well as China, Indonesia and Thailand.

The alleged dumping had impacted the industry, the applicants said, and they had requested for the imposition of the anti-dumping duty on the imports.

In a note, DGTR said that on the basis of prima facie evidence submitted by the applicants, “the authority, hereby, initiates an investigation.”

In the probe, the directorate would determine the existence, degree and effect of any alleged dumping in respect of the product under consideration from the four nations, The Hindu said.

According to the report, if the DGTR found that there was dumping and that it had impacted the domestic manufacturers, the agency would recommend the amount of anti-dumping duty, which if levied, would be adequate to remove the injury to the domestic industry.

The Hindu said the investigation period was from April 2019 to March 2020. It would also look into the data of the April 2016-2019 period. – June 24, 2020
