A MALAYSIAN businesswoman thought she was the target of a well-planned heist when she returned to her room in the ultra-swish Ritz Paris hotel to find her €750,000 (RM3.78 mil) ring missing.
Many theories were proffered ranging from an opportunistic staff who swiped the item to targeted robbery using inside information. However, the reality was much more mundane.
According to The Guardian, two days after the guest at the hotel reported the missing diamond ring to police, the hotel proffered an answer albeit less exciting than many of the theories that had circulated online: the hotel said security had found the ring in the bag of a vacuum cleaner.
The newspaper Le Parisien hinted that the admission had not been enough to dispel all doubts about exactly what transpired but the hotel said its client was delighted by the news.

“We would like to thank the staff at the Ritz Paris who mobilised for this search and who work each day with integrity and professionalism,” it told Le Parisien.
The Malaysian businesswoman informed police that she had left the ring on a table on Friday (Dec 8) while she went window shopping in the city for a few hours. When she returned to the room, she found that the ring was gone.
A day after she filed the complaint, the hotel said it was still exploring all leads. Police had arrived to investigate, and prosecutors stood ready to take the case on if suspicions pointed to a top-tier burglar. “We’re talking about a colossal loss,” a source with the city’s public prosecutor told Le Parisien.
What most people would like to know just who exactly is this “Malaysian businesswoman” who could treat a multi-million-ringgit item of jewellery with such casualness?
No matter how wealthy a person is, it beggars belief that such an expensive item would left on a table unattended as if it were a pasar malam trinket.
Is she one of those that former MCA veep Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker alluded to in his recent speech in the Dewan Negara when he said that the Bumiputera economic congress merely enabled the elite to go “holidaying in Paris and London”?
Or is she a Jho Low-type figure living off ill-gotten gains that breeds such a callous attitude?
At a time when most Malaysians are struggling to put food on the table, there are those on the other end of the spectrum who can treat a ring worth that much with such impunity.
