Malaysian IC, driver’s license found in Ukraine-Russia war zone; sparks plenty of ‘balik China’ rhetoric

NOW, this is intriguing.

Images released by Russian military apparently show a Malaysian identity card and driver’s license belonging to a 20-year-old Chinese guy bearing a Perlis address.

The items were among the many seized alongside insignia of Turkish and Croatian forces after it had stormed a Ukrainian stronghold.

The image was widely shared on social media, sparking plenty of speculation and no less racist rhetoric.

Put against the background of Chinese schoolkids who waved China flags to welcome a China vessel in Penang recently, the scene was ripe to be exploited for “misplaced loyalties”.

These are some of the comments found across various platforms.

X user Haixat (@noazhartori) had wanted the individual to be stripped of his citizenship for his stupidity in defending other nations while conveniently forgetting his own stance of ‘stand with Palestine’.

One netizen pointed out that Malaysian citizens are forbidden to be involved in any conflict unelated to one’s homeland. This includes the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Of course, some took the moral high ground when excusing their racist views by stating that participation in one conflict was a moral obligation “in the name of humanity” but not another.

However, some netizens pointedly asked if the many Malaysians who were members of terrorist group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham) fighting in Syria should then “be sent to the gallows”.

It must be noted that these ‘mujaheddin’ were welcomed back from Syria and assimilated back into society despite being involved in numerous atrocities.

To which the poster Haixat replied.

While another asked if the response would be different if the person was Muslim and caught fighting in Palestine.

Some were cynical and questioned why all the insignia look like it just came out of a box.

In another post, the tragedy of MH17 was alluded to with some saying perhaps the person had a personal grudge to settle.

On another post highlighting this very issue, some felt that this was just fake content.

One netizen was of the opinion that this was just a calculated attempt to create disharmony in the country.

In a lighter vein, some cheeky netizens surmised perhaps the young man who purpotedly hails from Perlis got confused over the flag.

Whether these claims are true, it is a damning indictment that this is used to play up racial issue when it is still conjecture.

Few have said anything about the many ISIS fighters prior when in fact, they have been welcomed back and assimilated into society, albeit after undergoing rehabilitation programme.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the police are still investigating the veracity of information regarding these claims by working with the Foreign Ministry to verify the authenticity of the documents. – Oct 30, 2024
