A MALAYSIAN netizen could not hide her contempt at a British X (formerly Twitter) user for criticising Tesco supermarkets for having a halal meat section in its UK outlets.
Alluding the slaughter process itself, Queen Natalie (@TheNorfolkLion) claimed that halal butchery was “inhumane and cruel”.
Shame on you @Tesco
This barbaric practise shouldn’t be allowed in the UK, it’s inhumane and cruel. pic.twitter.com/7PwHQLiACk

This was when Ilya’ (@IlyaniShou) retorted that despite Islam being Malaysia’s official religion, non-halal products could be easily found in grocers for the benefit of non-Muslims.
Ilyia’ is of the opinion that Queen Natalie was speaking as a bigot rather than as a person concerned about ethical treatment of livestock or one keen on promoting veganism, pointing to a remark that said the Brit would drop “some bacon” in the halal section when she sees one in her Tesco.
However, just to be clear, Queen Natalie did expressly state that she was against any slaughter that did not pre-stun livestock. She also clarified that her view was the same on kosher meats.
One netizen called out Queen Natalie for her racist views.
While another said he could not believe that people would get angry at such things.
Many, however, echoed Iliya’s sentiments, stating that understanding and respect is important.
Many said having such halal/non-halal sections were par for the course and standard in a multi-faith country, reflecting diversity and mutual respect and understanding.
Some netizens from predominantly Muslim countries further shared images of non-halal section of supermarkets in their countries.
The pertinent point that needs to be highlighted here is that such views as expressed by Queen Natalie lacked the sensitivity and understanding that is required in a multi-cultural society.
The same applies to the local ultra-conservatives who get on their high horses and make similar demands, for instance, that alcohol and entertainment outlets be banned. Like Queen Natalie, this is precisely how those views are perceived. Bigoted and lacking in cultural sensitivity. – Oct 7, 2024
