Malaysians react pessimistically to ringgit’s plummeting value against the greenback

A NETIZEN’S request for comments regarding the ringgit’s plummeting value against the US dollar has prompted a flurry of responses on the Entrepreneurs and Start-ups in Malaysia Facebook forum.

This is what some had to say.

Some feel the worse is yet to come.

More than one complained of it eating into their ever-dwindling profit margins.

Some were already bracing for the inevitable price hikes.

However, there were those who were clearly happy at this news due to their business model.

Some placed the blame squarely at the door of foreign workers who in remitting large amounts of the local currency back to their homelands has caused this alarming slide in the ringgit’s value.

Of course, the Madani government was not spared as netizens rightly questioned its fiscal policies that led to the current scenario.

However, some pointed out that this was financial/economic issue as opposed to a political one and that netizens should not confuse the two.

While some did say the blame should not be placed squarely on the current administration.

Others did suggest ways for Malaysians to navigate the scenario.

Amidst all the gloom and doom, there were those who saw a silver lining.

One proffered a simple solution.

The currency’s downward slide has certainly got a lot of Malaysians talking and more pertinently – concerned – especially at how it will further cause a spike in cost of living expenses. – Feb 21, 2024
