LAST Friday marked a terrible tragedy where a man could be heard screaming for help before being killed by a crocodile. The incident happened at the Batu 8 squatter area.
According to reports, the 28-year-old victim was seized by the reptile while crossing a wooden bridge in the squatter area.
Acting Sandakan district police chief, superintendent K Ramasamy, said investigations revealed that the victim was on his way to his brother’s house when the attack occurred.
Crocodile attacks in Sabah can be quite common, recently involving a 10 year old boy who was snatched by a crocodile and dragged into the sea.
Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga in an article said a total of 2,886 crocodiles inhabiting the rivers in Sabah were recorded.
Of that number, 1,386 were found in the Kinabatangan River. He said this was based on a three-year survey from 2017 to 2019.
“Most of the reptiles that inhabit the rivers are of the species Crocodylus Porosus or better known locally as the Copper Crocodile,“ he said.
Ramasamy continued, stating that the victim’s body had since been discovered by his family.
It was found about two metres from the scene at 9:30 pm on the same day, with crocodile bite marks on several parts of the body.
He also mentioned that the body was transported to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for a post-mortem, and the case has been classified as a sudden death. —Dec 15, 2024
