USUALLY, a leash is an accessory exclusive to man’s best friend. Even if an individual were to put a leash on a different animal, say a cat, the action would raise some eyebrows.
But put it on a human child, and in a space as public as a mosque and you are bound to get a place on the online stage.
And that was exactly what happened in a viral video which showed a father reining his child with a hand leash while he went to pray.
I was shocked the first time i saw this until i realized the reason parents do it 😂 pic.twitter.com/P6EIrJkhzy

Child abuse or innovative child management technique? It was a light moment in cyberspace with many warnings about the speed at which these little humans could run or escape.
The video has since prompted several others to share their experience.
The comment section was equally a place of comedy with netizen sebastian stating that parenting is just owning a tiny drunk person who tries to escape constantly.
“Their take-off speed is equivalent to that of an EV. This is recommended,” said Viruz whose thoughts were equally echoed by Gappa With Pappa.
Gappa With Pappa further inquired if the leash was available for sale on Amazon, being the father of a toddler.
The winning comment goes to Fadul ✯, who said, “You won’t know your creative till you become a parent.”
Silver//Ronix also pointed out that the leash may look cruel until the child goes missing.
“Some kids are simply more adventurous than others,” he said, adding that he didn’t do it because he didn’t have to. Regardless, he understands if some parents chose to do so.
Another netizen claimed that the leash became popularised in the UK after the kidnapping and killing of Jamie Bulger who was taken when his mother turned her back for a moment.
“These have saved countless lives from oncoming traffic, kidnap and accidents,” he added.
Mudassir suggested that instead of using a leash, parents should simply not bring their child along till they reach nine years old.
One netizen pointed out that the space in the mosque is vast, triggering the instinct of the child to run. “This is normal. So parents have tried to find a way,” he said. —Feb 24, 2025
