Man vowing divorce if Anwar remains PM in August must now proceed with claim

A MAN made who made a serious claim that he would divorce his wife if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was still in power in August must now go through with the divorce. The Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar stated that this is not revocable and that the man has to go through with the divorce.Under Islamic laws, it is explicitly stated that any request for divorce validation must be submitted to the Sharia court, as mandated by the enactments of all states. Thus, it is recommended that the concerned spouses – the husband or the wife – initiate the application process in court to confirm the divorce’s legitimacy.

Nevertheless, it is solely the jurisdiction of a Sharia judge in the locality where the couple resides to decide whether the divorce holds validity or not.Netizens are calling the man’s bluff.Twitter user @iamirulmokhtar said:

(The newspaper reported that Facebook was hacked. Sometimes I wonder, who might want to hack it? They’re not billionaires, not lawyers, and not magistrates.)

Others stated that everyone should be wary of their spouses, especially if they are hardcore opposition supporters.

Twitter user Eden Faiz @MRFAIZ07 pointed out:

(Make sure your potential partner is not among the extremists, especially if they are male. It can be dangerous when a politically obsessed man is willing to sacrifice his wife’s well-being just for his obsession with the PAS party.)Following that, there are some netizens who are happy for the man. They claim that it was what the man wanted (the divorce) the entire time.

(The husband had intended to divorce his wife from the very beginning, just waiting for August to end. Why should we stress over it? If he’s happy, we should also be happy for him, right?) –Sept 2, 2023
