Mat lajak case: Sam Ke Ting gets leave to appeal

THE Court of Appeal has granted bail for Sam Ke Ting who was convicted for reckless driving which had resulted in the deaths of eight teenagers in Johor Bahru.

The court – presided by judge Datuk P. Ravindran along with Datuk Lee Heng Cheong and Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali – will later set a hearing date to hear the merits of her appeal.

The bench also allowed her bid to stay the jail sentence and fine pending appeal.

The court also maintained her existing RM10,000 bail with one surety (from the Magistrate’s Court).

On April 13, the Johor Bahru High Court sentenced Sam to six years’ jail and a fine of RM6,000 for reckless driving which resulted in the deaths of eight teenagers on Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, Johor Baru, at 3:20am on Feb 18, 2017.

As the reckless driving case initially originated at the Magistrate’s Court rather than the Sessions Court, she needed to obtain leave from the Court of Appeal before she could proceed with the appeal.

On Wednesday last week, the Johor Bahru High Court overturned her acquittal for reckless driving.

Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Katar also denied an application by Sam’s lawyers for a stay of the sentence pending appeal. – April 18, 2022
