MCA: “Lack of further info reason behind low number of non-Bumi in civil service”

MCA has echoed the call by the government to encourage more non-Bumiputeras to join the civil service, saying that it is crucial to have a more racially-represented public sector nationwide for the wellbeing of the people.

MCA information deputy chief Mike Chong said ethnic diversity in the civil service will also enable government policies and agendas to be delivered to multi-racial communities accurately while ensuring that no one is left behind or left out of receiving government benefits.

“From the feedback received, we discovered that one of the reasons for the lack of non-Bumiputeras applying for the public sector is due to a lack of further information, whereby many are unaware of the steps to apply or the conditions that need to be followed,” he said in a statement.

“To overcome this dilemma, MCA always collaborates with Chinese guilds and associations and government agencies to organise roadshows, campaigns and workshops guided by the mission of approaching the Chinese community and explaining, as well as fostering their interest in public service.”

Chong, who is also the MCA Federal Territories Youth chief, said other measures that MCA has taken are publishing brochures in various languages and conducting walk-in interview sessions, as well as calling for the government to offer better salaries and incentives to civil servants.

“Additionally, education institutions founded and established by MCA, namely TAR UMT and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) have also established a Askar Wataniah Army Reserve Unit to encourage interest among students to join the Malaysian Armed Forces,” he stated.

“Among success stories of this programme are Second Lieutenant Chan Ming Youn who is also a graduate of TAR UMT, and was widely reported in the news to have successfully completed the commando course recently.

“He himself admitted that the TAR UMT Askar Wataniah programme had helped to give him the awareness to become a soldier.”

Underscoring the party’s commitment to attract Chinese youths to join the civil service, Chong said MCA will continue to undertake its role to foster awareness.

“This includes conveying the government’s message to the Chinese community to ensure that the civil service may witness the recruitment of more non-Bumiputeras, further ensuring that government policies are fair to all communities and do not ignore the interests of any races,” he added. – May 17, 2024
