MCMC cracking down on false news regarding Islamic religious event

THE Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently investigating the spread of false content on Facebook involving the organisation of the National and International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Council this year.

In a statement, MCMC said the spread of false news was found on Facebook through several accounts and has called up four individuals who were spreading the content.

“Yesterday (April 5), four of the Facebook account owners who were suspected of sending the content were called to be questioned and their statements were recorded by MCMC.

“All the information uploaded by them has been recorded as evidence for further investigation and action,” said the commission.

Over the past few days, claims have spread by several Facebook account owners and on the X platform that Malaysia no longer organises al-Quran recitation competitions and only focuses on organising concerts.

Religious Affairs Deputy Minister Dr Zulkifli Hasan dismissed the allegations, adding that the event will be held from Oct 5 to Oct 12, not April, as some have suggested.

He said that the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has set up a national-level Level Al-Quran Recitation and memorisation ceremony to be held from May 23 to 28 in Kuantan, Pahang.

The case involved is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both if convicted.

The public is reminded not to misuse network services and online application services to spread any inauthentic or fake content. – April 6, 2024
