AS THE heat from the six state elections is felt across the nation, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has reiterated its warning to the public against uploading or sharing any hateful and insulting content or views involving the royal institution on social media and messaging applications.
This warning was issued following the detection of sharing by irresponsible individuals who spread content that is insulting to the royal institution.
“Accordingly, MCMC will continue to monitor and curb the spread of unauthentic information as well as malicious statements involving royal institutions,” the regulatory body pointed out in a statement.
“Any sharing of false, ugly and threatening content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which if convicted can be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or a year in prison or both.”
Recall that Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a final warning on July 11 to all political parties to not exploit issues touching on race, religion and the royal institution (3R) which can split the country.

“This is the final warning from the government as I, as PM, have no choice due to insistence from thinkers and to protect national security. This supersedes interests,” he justified. “Certain people feel they are too high up and great so they cannot possibly be charged or challenged. The country cannot be like this; we cannot consider and choose based on rank, descent or wealth,”
Meanwhile, MCMC said a joint enforcement action with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be taken against those involved in accordance with existing legal provisions in order to protect public order and interests.
“The public is reminded not to upload, share or spread social media content that insults the royal institution but instead report it to MCMC at the link https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my and PDRM,” it added. – Aug 12, 2023
