Met Department: Selangorians better brace for severe downpour

IT seems that the 100-year once flooding saga which rattled the Klang Valley last weekend is far from over.

The tell-tale sign was evident today when flash floods following a downpour early this morning resulted in crawling traffic near the Bukit Jelutong toll plaza in Shah Alam.

Media Selangor, the official media of the Selangor state government, further reported rising water levels in several areas in Shah Alam.

Above all else, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong wind warning to several areas in Selangor this morning.

MetMalaysia on Facebook said the bad weather is expected to occur in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

The agency had also forecasted similar situations to happen in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and several districts in Johor, including Pontian, Kulai and Johor Bahru.

“The warning is issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm/hour which are expected to occur over the one-hour duration,” noted MetMalaysia.

“Thunderstorms warning is a short-term warning which is valid within six hours after it was issued.”

Although the warning was issued at 9.30am today, it is always best not to throw caution to the wind, especially so for those living in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
