Minister Nik Nazmi confirms resignation, citing loss of party mandate

DESPITE receiving appeals to remain in office, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is said to be resolute in his decision to resign from his role as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.

The matter drew further attention after he posted on Instagram earlier today, where he appeared to deliver a farewell address during a send-off believed to have taken place at his ministry in Putrajaya.

His resignation as Member of Parliament for Setiawangsa is set to take effect this coming Friday, as he is currently on leave.

Speaking during a YouTube podcast last week, Nik Nazmi reiterated that his decision to step down was final.

He admitted the choice wasn’t an easy one and said he took into account various considerations, including his position within PKR.

“To be in politics means respecting the mandate given. Since I no longer have that mandate, it becomes difficult to carry on,” he explained.

Although he recognised that remaining in his ministerial role would come with certain benefits, he felt that stepping aside was the most appropriate move.

A source close to the former PKR vice president confirmed that he had already cleared out his office last month.

Earlier, Home Minister and PH secretary-general, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, had voiced hope that Nik Nazmi would reconsider his resignation from the Cabinet.

On 28 May, Nik Nazmi announced he had formally submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with effect from 4 July.

His move came just hours after Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli announced he was stepping down as Minister of Economy, a decision that took effect on 17 June.

Both PKR leaders decided to leave their Cabinet roles following their respective losses in the party elections in May, where they failed to retain their posts as Deputy President and Vice President. —July 1, 2025
