THE recent harrowing story of a family of seven living in a car is testament to the depth of poverty the unfortunate could plunge into.
But in the hopelessness lies opportunity for humanity to redeem itself as seen through the kind efforts of Steven Sim, the MP of Bukit Mertajam.

His efforts to aid the family has touched the hearts of numerous netizens in the cyberspace as highlighted by Sinar Harian, with many heaping praises in the comment section.
But within the heartwarming atmosphere, some chilly opinions can be found too.
Netizen Ashton Kutcher said Kelantan is a place where people usually have many children. He was pointing out to the poor family who hailed from the east coast state.
“Please don’t come and make a mess in other people’s place. Go find your fortune in your own place,” he said, adding that children should not be used as a way to gain sympathy, that it was the wrong concept.
Another netizen thanked the MP but also advised to take the man’s wife to the health ministry for contraceptives.
“It’s a headache to see them poor while having so many children. You don’t even have enough to feed yourself,” she said.
One netizen cautioned that Steven may be accused of trying to get the Malay votes by helping them.
On another note, Muhammad Syakir Hj. Mohd Nasaruddin said this is what social media should be used for, and not to hurl political slander.
He is likely referring to the role of social media to aid the poor or raising awareness on people who required aid.
Prompted by the good will, Thunkramom Yai suggested that Lalamove offer them some aid too since the father was likely a Lalamove rider.
On Facebook, Mariam Mokhtar Admri-Gen lamented the lack of aid from Zakat or Jakim when it comes to helping the poor.
ALWAYSLOVEPEACE further suggested that Steven start solving the issue of drunk drivers killing the public under section 302.
“Now, not even one Malay MP is brave enough to voice out this issue. Please help us the people of Malaysia who are increasingly being threatened by drunk drivers,” he said.
To recap, the family of seven was forced to stay in a car after being scammed by a landlord.
Steven had since found them a home with one year’s worth of rental aid given. The father is currently working as a company as a lorry operator. —Dec 23, 2024
