MOHE issues show cause letter to LKWU over racism complaints

THE Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has issued a show cause letter to Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LKWU) over the complaints that were made about racism being practised at the university.

The ministry responded to this on July 15, after Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming raised the question of what the ministry was doing regarding the complaints of racism against students and staff from Africa, which would affect the reputation of the higher education sector in Malaysia.

“The ministry is always attentive towards complaints associated with private institutes of higher learning, especially those involving the welfare of international students,” said the ministry in response to the question.

The racism complaints were regarding a controversial billboard that had been posted on LKWU’s Cyberjaya campus showing its founder and namesake as the “King of Africa”.

After receiving public backlash, LKWU took down the billboard and issued an apology on the university’s Twitter account.

MOHE also noted that, even though LKWU has apologised, an investigation will continue to ensure the reputation and image of Malaysia are upheld.

“The ministry will not compromise on issues that involve racism and will ensure all complaints related to this matter are resolved,” it said.

Citing Section 89(1) of the Private Institute of Higher Learning Act 1996 (Act 555), the ministry noted it is clearly stated that private institutes are to be open to all without discrimination of gender, race, religion, nationality, or class.

MOHE is also able to impose stern action on any party, including the management of private institutes, that are found guilty of racism or similar issues.

“All private institutes of higher learning that are registered under Act 555 need to focus on offering quality courses. They also play a role in helping the nation promote private higher education with branding and a national image that is respected globally,” said the ministry. – July 16, 2020
