INTERESTINGLY, some of the smartest people also have interesting behaviours.
Take it from Professor Dr Ooi Chong Heng from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, University Malaya who stole the limelight for leading a humble life despite his accomplishments.
Apparently the professor was known for riding a motorcycle to work with a helmet in his signature position skewed to the side.
Recently, the man was also recognised for the development of a quantum (Heisenberg-Langevin) theoretical framework for the study of nonclassical photon correlations in Raman and quantum plasmonic systems.
If there is anyone who could translate this into English, we will appreciate it.
Orang-orang cerdik pandai ni biasanya dia tak kisah sangat pun pasal gaya atau kemewahan.
Contoh macam Prof Dr. Ooi Chong Heng ni. Budak-budak UM mesti kenal lah. Professor hebat, tapi pergi tapi sana sini naik C70 je dengan helmet steng terbalik.

On a lower intellectual level, netizens find his eccentric behaviour entertaining while others claim his frugal lifestyle as a good example for people to emulate.
“He also used the knowledge of physics in his daily routine,” claims Amran Fans who said the professor will kill the engine when riding his bike downhill.
“If you don’t believe it, ask the kids from University Malaya,” he added.
Netizen Sam further claimed that he heard the University Malaya kids telling that the professor would release his hands when riding a bicycle.
Opheace said that his motorcycle was the type used by those Chinese uncles who go out to eat the nasi lemak at Shanmuga near Taman Berkeley, Klang.
Noting his long beard, KakSue commented that this was one Chinese professor who followed the sunnah where practitioners of the Islamic faith would keep a long beard as a sign of piety.
Then there was the harumanis guy who measured the intellect of a person by his ability to understand the title of the thesis written.
Also, Deen recommended Professor Dr Hamedi Adnan, another person from University Malaya who was smart yet humble.
On another note, we are still trying to understand what is a quantum (Heisenberg-Langevin) theoretical framework for the study of nonclassical photon correlations in Raman and quantum plasmonic systems.
Maybe there is something about riding a motorcycle while wearing the helmet at an awkward angle which raises the level of one’s intelligence where it concerns the realm of physics. —Feb 14, 2025
