Motoring journo posts odometer hitting 600k km; invites sharing of cars over 500k km

ASIDE from property, many Malaysians tend to invest in cars to take them from point A to point B in view of inconvenience posed by unreliable or unavailability of public transportation.

Many motorists rarely get to use a vehicle beyond 200k-300k km as most will switch to a new car once six digits are reached on the odometer.

Or they just don’t find themselves being hardcore road users by chewing up the miles on a daily basis.

With more motorists switching to electric vehicles (EV), finding motorists who will drive their cars past high six digits are becoming even rarer as these are fairly new and many owners would tend to change cars once batteries of their EVs approach their lifespan.

However, motoring editor Hezeri Samsuri (@HezeriSamsuri) takes this high mileage as a badge of honour.

Posting on X, he shared an image of a friend’s Toyota Corolla Altis which clocked the landmark 600,000km after 15 years of ownership with the friend whom he identified as “Cin from Dungun (Terengganu)” proclaiming that the car has rendered him “excellent service”.

Hence, he urged proud owners who have passed this landmark to share images of their odometers, stating hat he would proudly post his soon as well. The call to arms has been viewed 455K times with plenty sharing similar if not higher numbers.

With one saying his MyVi had stood the test of time with him clocking up the miles as a full-time Grab driver. It only recently necessitated an engine change though the gearbox was still functioning well after for seven years of hard usage.

One even “maxxed out” the odometer, with the reading poised to go full circle back to ‘zero’ km,

One commenter asked how long more will the car be able to continue serving its owner to which the poster confidently said with proper maintenance, there’s no reason why it can’t continue eating up the miles.

Another proud owner claimed that early-2000s Toyota cars were just built different.

One netizen roughly calculated the amount of time a driver needs per day to clock up such figures. He gave kudos who did long haul journeys for prolonged periods.

It is indeed heartening to see so many proud drivers post images of odometers that have passed the half million mark.

In an age of disposability where many motorists seem to change vehicles every few short years, it is refreshing to see that plenty see the value (and logic) in keeping old cars running.

As the EV transformation gathers pace, there is a lot to be said for maintaining old cars and keeping them on the road. As many of proud owners have shown, there is no reason why these cars can’t continue to perform despite being well over a decade-old.

Such owners may not be behind the wheel of the latest new-fangled toy but they are displaying sure signs of financial prudence. And there are plenty positives in that.
