MP to Abu Zahar: “Why wait so long to clarify if media had indeed misquoted you?”

AN Opposition MP has thrown shade at Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chairman Abu Zahar Ujang for taking almost one week to hit out at the media over alleged misreporting of his press conference last Wednesday (Jan 5).

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said that Abu Zahar blaming the media makes no sense as the latter had also failed to explicitly state which part of his press conference the media had allegedly misquoted him.

“If the media had truly misquoted his press conference, why didn’t Abu Zahar immediately explain the matter on Jan 6 or Jan 7?” the DAP lawmaker asked in a statement last night.

“Why did he need to wait until yesterday? Does this mean that he has no evidence to support his allegations?”

Lim also hurled brickbats at Abu Zahar for expressing his regret over how six ACAB board members had gone behind his back to issue a statement on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s share ownership.

“Didn’t he himself make a unilateral statement earlier without the consent of all ACAB board members at his Jan 5 press conference?” he pointed out.

“I advise Abu Zahar to apologise to the media and also the six ACAB board members,” he said. In a press conference yesterday (Jan 11) Abu Zahar claimed that the media had misquoted him during the press conference held on Jan 5, adding they only reported excerpts from his 13-page media statement.

He also mentioned that the ACAB had issued several recommendations on how to deal with the scandal, which was not picked up by the media. – Jan 12, 2022
