M’sia initiates anti-dumping probe on tin-plated steel imports from Asia

THE Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) has announced the initiation of an anti-dumping duty investigation on tin-plated steel imports from China, India, Japan, and South Korea. The move follows a petition filed by local producer Perusahaan Sadur Timah Malaysia (Perstima) Bhd, according to Bernama.

Perstima has alleged that these imports are being sold in Malaysia at prices significantly lower than those in their home countries, a practice that could harm the domestic industry.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed that a preliminary determination on the matter will be made within 120 days from the initiation of the investigation. Should the preliminary findings confirm the allegations, the government is prepared to impose a provisional anti-dumping duty to protect the local industry from further damage.

“In accordance with the Act and the regulations, a preliminary determination will be made within 120 days from the date of initiation.

“If the preliminary determination is affirmative, the government will impose a provisional anti-dumping duty at a rate necessary to prevent further injury to the domestic industry.”

MITI has announced plans to distribute questionnaires and relevant documents to interested parties including importers, foreign exporters or producers from the named countries, trade associations, and the governments involved.

Those who wish to participate in the investigation must request the necessary questionnaires by Aug 29 and submit their responses, views, and supporting evidence by Sept 13.

Furthermore, MITI warned that if interested parties fail to provide sufficient information within the stipulated time frame, the government may base its preliminary determination on the facts available.

In the event that interested parties fail to provide the necessary information or submit inadequate information and views within the specified time limit, the government may base its preliminary determination on the available facts.– Aug 15, 2024
