M’sian students proved their mental calculation abilities, bringing home the gold

DURING the second annual World Online Soro Touch competition (SoroFes 2021) that was hosted by educational tech (edtech) platform SoroTouch, the Malaysian team bagged gold medals in some of the individual categories and a team gold as well as a bronze medal in Junior Group.

The competition witnessed a total of 618 participants from all over the world, including Japan and China, competing in a nine-hour long mental calculation tournament to claim the title of the World’s Best Mental Calculator.

The 79-strong Malaysian team comprised decorated and capable students from edtech provider Ai Tech House, which is an exclusive partner of SoroTouch in Malaysia.

The determined students took part in both individual and group categories in all three divisions – Junior, Super, and Ultra, participating in events such as Flash Anzan, where they solved long strings of mathematical problems in just a matter of seconds without the use of calculators, and the blind abacus test, where they added up numbers with an imaginary abacus.

“I’m very proud of what our ‘anak-anak Malaysia’ has achieved in this SoroFes. This not only serves as a huge confidence booster for Malaysian participants, but also showcases the talents and unlimited potential of our students,” Ai Tech House founder West Wong told FocusM.

“It is heartening to see students getting together, despite hailing from different corners of the world and speaking completely different languages, to enjoy, discuss, and appreciate the common language of mathematics,” added SoroTouch president Yasunobu Hashimoto.

The revolutionary edtech platform

Originating from Japan, SoroTouch’s data-driven approach to mathematics allows for faster mastery of mathematics and mental calculation.

By processing more than 590,000 responses from over 6,000 students on a daily basis, SoroTouch is able to better curate and structure unique challenges and questions based on their level of understanding of the subject matter and allows students to master mental calculations in less than two years, which is less than half the time required to master the skill through traditional methods.

Through partners like Ai Tech House in Malaysia, SoroTouch’s big data-backed Education Tech solution is made available for local students to build passion towards mathematics and instil a growth mindset, allowing the cultivation of the “4Cs”: Critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and comunication within students through a slew of exciting games on the SoroTouch centre system. – Sept 25, 2021
