MUDA has announced its decision to hold its party election earlier than scheduled, shifting it from 2025 to the end of this year. The decision comes amidst growing discontent among members with the current leadership, as stated by the party’s secretary-general Amir Hadi.
He cited member dissatisfaction as the primary reason behind the decision to advance the election timeline.
“The election would be brought forward due to unhappiness among members with the current leadership. According to the Registrar of Societies, we are only due for party elections next year,” news portal Free Malaysia Today quoted him as saying.
Amir also pointed out the need for certain preparatory measures, including refining the party’s membership system.
“We are working on a (better) system, which will hopefully be done by the end of March. Previously, anyone could be a member. We want it to be more organised now,” he said, adding that all positions would be open for members to contest, even the presidency.
Previously, there were complaints among MUDA members regarding a lack of transparency in the party’s decision-making processes and communication gaps between the leadership and grassroots. Many felt excluded from crucial discussions about the party’s direction and internal matters, sparking calls for reform within the organisation.
“The decisions by the party’s top leadership were not conveyed to the grassroots. They do not share the outcomes of their meetings with the members. It is as if the party belongs to a few individuals. The rest of us are left in the dark,” a source in the party had said.
Moreover, MUDA member Danial Jafri echoed these sentiments, stressing the necessity of addressing internal issues and improving the party’s structure. He noted the importance of conducting elections following the party’s defeat in all 19 seats contested during the recent state polls.
“The call for a party election was consistent with the grassroots’ demands for internal issues to be addressed and the party’s structure enhanced.” – March 1, 2024
