Muhyiddin appointed National Recovery Council head, Zaid miffed

IN an interesting turn of events, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Recovery Council (NRC).

“The Cabinet had agreed to this on Sept 1 and it has been presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The position is of ministerial rank,” Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said, in a statement.

Muhyiddin was ousted from power last month following several Umno MPs decision to withdraw support from him.

The group attributed the decision to the Pagoh MPs failure to contain COVID-19 and dilly-dallying on decision to convene the Parliament, despite requests from Istana Negara.

However, not all in Umno supported the move to oust Muhyiddin, including newly-minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The National Recovery Plan (NRP) was mooted by Muhyiddin, which would be focused on gradually reopening several economic sectors as COVID-19 improves.

Following his departure, Ismail Sabri had courted Opposition leaders to join the NRC and COVID-19 Task Force.

On related matter, former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim mocked the appointment, saying it was a sure way of getting Muhyiddin back to become prime minister.

“Tahniah (Congratulations) Muhyiddin Pengerusi National Recovery. He will be next PM I am sure. That will be our full recovery,” he said, in a tweet. – Sept 4, 2021.
