BERSATU president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin accused the government of fearing to declare vacancies for six parliamentary seats and one state assembly seat to avoid further electoral defeats.
Speaking at the Bersatu Convention in Selayang, Muhyiddin said, “Although they hold power, they are actually weak, very weak.”
He attributed the government’s hesitation to declare the six Bersatu seats vacant to their recent loss in the Sungai Bakap by-election.
“It is strange they suffered such a defeat,” he remarked. Muhyiddin also stated that Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are gaining public support, as shown by increased votes in recent elections.
The Pagoh MP criticised Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul for not declaring the six seats vacant, saying it violated Article 49A(3) of the Federal Constitution.
Meanwhile, for the upcoming Bersatu party election, there are expected to be no contests for the top leadership in order to preserve party unity, according to Muhyiddin.
Moreover, the Bersatu president said that he has held discussions and negotiated with party members to avoid any clashes in the lead-up to the October election.
“The idea for negotiation came up during the party’s retreat last month. Among the motions proposed was that I would meet up with the top leadership and discuss ways to avoid clashes within the party.
“I have met all of them and negotiated with them so that perhaps we can avoid any conflicts over the top positions in the party.” – July 13, 2024
