THE proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the opposition has become a politically charged issue, with the opposition portraying it as an attempt to silence their voices and undermine parliamentary democracy.
However, the true aim of the MOU is to curb debates that promote racial hatred, not to restrict freedom of speech, said Senator Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.
“The opposition falsely suggests this MOU is meant to silence them, when its real goal is to foster responsible and constructive debate, free from divisive rhetoric,” Mujahid noted.
Unlike Pakatan Harapan (PH), which previously embraced the MOU and negotiated respectfully when in opposition, Perikatan Nasional (PN) has rejected the initiative outright, claiming it stifles democracy.
According to Mujahid, PH had “no issues with hate speech” and had supported key reforms like the anti-hopping law when they signed a similar MOU during former premier Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri’s tenure.
Mujahid further criticised PN’s refusal, stating that it reveals the “true face” of certain PN leaders who are using this issue for political gain. He emphasised that this rejection also harms first-time MPs in PN, who now bear the consequences of the senior leadership’s actions.
Ultimately, the MOU is seen as a lost opportunity for building a mature and responsible parliamentary democracy. As Mujahid concluded, “The public is watching closely.” – Sept 21, 2024
