MALIM Nawar assemblyman Leong Cheok Keng has expressed his confidence that his constituents will choose a candidate who takes care of their needs rather than someone who just spouts mere rhetoric.
This is despite him leaving DAP to join Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) following the termination of his DAP membership early last year.
“I am very close to my constituents and have a strong service team which serves all their constituents’ needs,” Leong said.
“The feedback I have received is that they believe that I am a person who delivers on my promises, based on my track record.”
Leong was recently elected as a PBM supreme council member.
“Of course, I foresee there are hardcore supporters of my former party who cannot accept the fact that I’m no longer with DAP,” he added.
“I decided to join PBM as it is a multiracial party, not just in name like a few others, but in substance.
“Both the leadership line-up and the membership of PBM reflect the demographics of our country. As such, it can really champion the rights of not just one ethic group, but those of all Malaysians.”
Leong said that currently there was no such multiracial parties in the Government coalition, and PBM would do well to fill the void.
“The party also focuses on the empowerment of women and youths, and I believe that PBM could effectively defend the rights of all Malaysians,” he remarked.
“Also, being in the Supreme Council, I can have a say in terms of government policies which we intend to formulate for the general wellbeing of the country.
“These policies, if implemented by the Government whether at the federal or the state levels would invariably benefit my constituents.
“For example, if we champion an issue which is quintessentially Chinese, like the recognition of UEC examinations, my Malay comrades in the party can engage other relevant stakeholders such as the Malay education groups in a manner a single race party can never do.”
As for his immediate plans after joining PBM, Leong said he would assist in the publicity of the party, especially in the Chinese media.
“I will also do my part to formulate strategies so our party can win a respectable number of seats in Parliament and in the Perak State Assembly.
“I want to ensure that PBM is a force to be reckoned with.” – Feb 9, 2022
