MyAirline fiasco: Netizens want net to be cast far and wide to nab all errant players

VETERAN journalists and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin has sparked a debate among netizens with this simple one-liner ‘breaking news” development of the financially distressed budget carrier MYAirline on his Facebook page:

“The public via the mainstream and social media must continue to monitor all these arrests and investigations. Shouldn’t be allowed to become window dressing. Belakang kawtim (settled behind the scene),” he quipped to a comment by netizen Sam Kinston who compared the modus operandi of the Malaysian police and that of their Singaporean counterpart.

“When Singapore goes after money launderers, the net is cast deep and wide as laundering involved a huge network of people,” observed Sam.

“Let’s see how big a net PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) has … or it’s just the usual, one sudahlah cukup (sufficient already) … tak payah susah-susah (no need so much trouble) … just find a scapegoat while the big paus (shark) walk around freely …”

Netizen Abdul Rahim Ahmad suggested that that the lead must not stop with the said co-founder but “the (entire) BoD (board of director) members and those behind the scenes”.

“Politicians? Playing ignorant and victim,” lamented Abdul Rahim with Kadir wholesomely agreed.

“The whole MYAirline board of directors and senior management must be investigated. Surely they know the sources of their capital.”

This is when Keith Chua added more potential ‘suspects’ into the list.

“Not just the BOD or senior management but those in the government that approved the airlines – MOT (Transport Ministry), CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia), etc. Obviously, either the government did a sloppy job in their due diligence or there is some hanky-panky.”

Whatever said and done, netizen Shamsuddin Nawawi reckoned that the arrest is a good start. “Hopefully it will continue with a thorough investigation and finally a conviction in court. And naturally we also hope not to see a DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal).”

For context, netizen Ishak Ismail recalled that MyAirline was started “using money from an investment scam called iServe”.

“During TSMS’ (sic) (probably referring to eight premier Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) tenure as PM, they manage to cover the case. BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) only fined the company iServe for RM50 mil but didn’t take action against promoter of the scheme Datuk Allen Goh,” explained Ishak.

“When a new police report was lodged, they (the police) opened new file and started arresting the promoter.”

So, what would be the final outcome likely to be?

“NFA (no further action) final results,” teased netizen Shanker Mailvaganam with Razali Jalal seconding: “Yeah, you are 99.9% correct. But normally (the) result (will be announced) after two to three months … Bagi sejuk isu dulu (let the issue cools down first).” – Oct 19, 2023
