Najib commences 12-year jail term in Kajang prison

FORMER prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has reportedly arrived at the Kajang Prison Complex to serve his 12-year sentence after the Federal Court affirmed his conviction earlier today (Aug 23).

The move took many members of the media by surprise as many had gone to the Sungai Buloh prison to cover Najib’s arrival at the facility from the apex court, which will mark the beginning of Najib’s 12-year jail term.

So far, authorities including the Prisons Department have been keeping mum on where Najib is going to be held.

The five-person apex court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat this afternoon unanimously dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal to quash his conviction over seven criminal charges as well as the sentencing.

The other judges sitting with Tengku Maimun are Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court Judges Datuk P. Nalini, Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan and Datuk Muhammad Zabidin Mohd Diah.

Najib was sentenced to prison and a fine of RM210 mil after he was convicted on seven charges brought against him for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds amounting to RM42 mil.

With the decision, Najib becomes the first former prime minister in the history of the country to be jailed. – Aug 23, 2022
