Najib to critics: Mahiaddin focused on retaining power, not COVID-19 containment

AMID criticism over politicking during a health crisis, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak hits back saying the political quagmire stems from the Government’s failed response to the pandemic.

“Focus on COVID-19 and don’t disturb the Government, they say. I say to you, if the Government had focused on the pandemic, our cases would not have skyrocketed like this.

“If our prime minister was focused on COVID-19, he would not have imposed repeated half-baked lockdowns.

“And can someone explain to me how our COVID-19 can become 12 times worse within seven months, despite the premier having Emergency powers at his disposal?” he asked, in a Facebook post.

Two days ago, Umno announced that it was withdrawing support from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government and urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin to resign.

Despite seemingly losing majority support, Mahiaddin said in live telecast yesterday that he would only seek a confidence vote next month, when the Parliament reconvenes.

As the political crisis deepens, Malaysia recorded the highest COVID-19 infections yesterday, at 19,819 cases and a whopping 257 deaths.

Many hospitals, especially in the Klang Valley are on edge due to the sheer number of infections cases, with many of them seeking help from the private sector for additional equipment.

Training his guns against Mahiaddin, Najib said the former was the one who lacked focus and made numerous mistakes in COVID-19 containment, which led to deaths and economic devastation.

“The only thing Mahiaddin is focused on is retaining power, come what may, and how to buy over more ‘frogs’ to support him.

“This is the reality, which prompted Umno to call for his resignation. We need a leader who will be totally focused on containing the pandemic,” the Pekan MP remarked. – Aug 5, 2021.
