DATUK Seri Najib Razak does not have the financial means to settle the RM50 mil fine imposed as one of the conditions for him to serve the remainder of his SRC International prison sentence under house arrest.
His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said the former prime minister is currently unable to raise the amount required.
“As of today, Datuk Seri Najib himself is unable to pay it. He cannot afford to pay it,” he said.
According to Shafee, Najib’s bank accounts have been frozen, including an Affin Bank account which he said was previously used to receive the former premier’s salary as prime minister and Member of Parliament.
Shafee also clarified that Najib had not sought financial contributions from members of the public to help settle the RM50 mil fine.
He said Najib was caught in a difficult situation, having been required to pay the fine as one of the conditions attached to his pardon while lacking the financial capacity to do so.
As of 24 Sept, news media CNA reported that the fund had raised more than RM1mil, but funds entering has been slow of late.
Shafee further revealed that Najib has yet to receive the official letter concerning the conditional pardon granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The letter is important as it would formally allow Najib to serve the remaining portion of his SRC International sentence under house arrest.
“We do not know why the letter is taking so long. Even the Prisons Department has not received it,” he said.
Shafee added that eight days had passed since Najib was granted the conditional pardon.—Sept 25, 2026
