“Nauseating and disgusting”: Khairuddin slams ‘Anwar: The Untold Story’ film

DATUK Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan has described ‘Anwar: The Untold Story’ as a “nauseating and disgusting” viewing experience, claiming that the biopic, focusing on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s arduous political path, is intended to slander and tarnish Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s image.

“I have just finished watching ‘Anwar: The Untold Story’, which was a nauseating and disgusting film,” Khairuddin ranted on his Twitter yesterday night (May 18).

“This ‘lousy’ film promotes Anwar to the status of a ‘godfather’”.

Additionally, he claimed that the film – directed by Indonesian director Viva Westi – contains many “misleading” elements and that it was produced without obtaining enough research based on true facts.

“Is there no other Malaysian director for the job?  Who is the one that wrote the script?” the former Federal Territories Pejuang chief demanded.

Khairuddin, who is a loyalist of former prime minister Dr Mahathir also claimed that he almost felt like he was watching an Indonesian film as the actors were “trying very hard” to speak in Bahasa Melayu but it sounded awkward.

This was because 99% of the actors featured in the film were Indonesians, he added.

Set between 1993 and 1998, the film portrays Anwar during his stint as deputy prime minister and finance minister, as well as his fight against corruption.

The film started showing in cinemas nationwide yesterday (May 18).

In response to Khairuddin’s comments, Twitter user @Xzib8t said that while it is all right for Khairuddin to dislike Anwar, it is “unethical and childish” for him to criticise other people’s hard work.

User @orea_koshka27 joked that Khairuddin was willing to torture himself for an hour and a half watching a “nauseating” film just to give a review that nobody cared about.

Meanwhile, user @Blinkblankblur called Khairuddin’s review the “most disgusting review” she has ever seen as it sounded “so, so unprofessional and personal”.

User @NurnisaOmar similarly thought Khairuddin’s opinion is biased as Khairuddin was not a Pakatan Harapan supporter and that he belonged to the opposition.

“Don’t simply read reviews knowing that the person who wrote the review is from the opposition bloc,” she advised.  – May 19, 2023
