Netizen explores Malaysia’s mega corruption scandals and the losses are staggering

WITH the numerous news of corruption circulating across our dear nation, one can only wonder how much money had been lost to unscrupulous politicians and bad actors.

According to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Malaysia managed to improve its position in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023, from 61st to 57th position out of 180 countries.

Sounds refreshing, but has anyone considered the amount of money Malaysia lost over the years through corruption?

This is a tricky question, but a netizen on X made a worthy attempt at portraying some of the largest corruption cases on International Anti-Corruption Day which drew the attention of many on the cyberspace.

Soscili laid out four mega cases in total, with the amount of losses as well as a summary and punishment meted out to the perpetrators. An excerpt of his entire presentation is as such:

1/ Sabah Water Department / RM114.5 mil

2/ Bumiputera Malaysia Finance / RM2.5 bil

3/ Port Klang Free Zone / RM12 bil

4/ 1Malaysia Development Bhd / RM20 bil

Note that the information in this article is based on Soscili’s research and not the opinion of FOCUS Malaysia.

To better imagine the size of the monetary loss attributed to these cases, netizen Edruce Idrisi helpfully added in the comment section that even if a person spends RM1,000 every day, he will need 2,740 years to finish up even RM1 bil.

Reacting to the topic, one frightening netizen suggested that the way to stop corruption was being shot to death in the public and having it recorded. He added that it should involve the giver and taker of the bribe.

Netizen islander further mentioned that children should be taught about such cases in school and appropriately, the punishment meted out to them.

Then there was netizen Rakyat Marhaen who suggested the list of mega corruption cases be expanded to include several others.

Despite the seriousness of the topic, one netizen managed to inject some humour, stating that no Indian was involved in these mega corruption cases.

Although commendable, we believe it would take a herculean effort to reflect the full effect of corruption in Boleh Land.

Interestingly, the cases mentioned by Soscili amounts to about RM34.6145 bil in total.

If a person spending RM1,000 every day needs 2,740 years to finish up even RM1 bil, how long will RM34.6145 bil require? —Dec 13, 2024
