Netizens hurl brickbats at UMNO veep for saying Malays need the party

YESTERDAY, UMNO vice president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said that the Malays only needs his party to represent them, adding too many other political outfits would only divide the community.

He said this following UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s decision to revive the old UMNO, which was deregistered in 1988 due to a power struggle.

“Only Umno alone is enough, if we form many more parties, we (the Malays) will be further divided.

“Let’s stay united in a single organisation,” Malaysiakini reported Mahdzir as saying.

However, netizens were unimpressed with the Padang Terap MP’s claims and took to social media to reprimand him.

“I’m Malay, I don’t need UMNO and I don’t want UMNO n PAS,” said user Xtrailme.

User Tengku Haslinda added: Malays dont need Umno, UMNO do need Malays.”

Echoing Haslinda’s sentiments, user Tan Sri Mujeebudeen said that Malays do not need to many parties to represent them any longer but should join multi-racial bodies.

“Malays don’t need so many MALAY parties. What Malays need is just one multi-racial party which treats every Bangsa Malaysia from Perlis To Sabah with fair & equal justice.

“They don’t need thieves, crooks & hypocrites to be their leaders anymore!”

Currently, there are several Malay-only parties which are jostling to gain traction among the Malay community such as UMNO, PAS, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

While Amanah is part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition; UMNO and Bersatu are allies in the ruling coalition but are at loggerheads with each other over dominance in the pact.

On that note, user Mikhail Hafiz said that while UMNO needs the Malays, it may not be necessary true for the community itself.

“While UMNO still needs the Malays, the reverse may not necessarily be true. The diversification of the Malay political polity and the proliferation of political parties that can represent the Malays means that UMNO, while still remaining relevant, is no longer indispensable.”

User Elyanna Abdullah retorted: “Malays do not need UMNO. Rich UMNO Malays need it, to ensure they will be able to keep robbing the country.” – Oct 10, 2021.
