Netizens berate Hadi’s MIA antic as disrespecting Agong in his maiden parliamentary duty

A pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) netizen has hit out at PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang for being disrespectful to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar by having skipped the official opening of the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament yesterday (Feb 26) – the first Parliament opening ceremony by the Johor ruler since being sworn in as the 17th YDPA on Jan 31.

“How rude could Hadi Awang be by not showing up when the Agong graced the Parliament session for the first time and delivered his maiden speech,” berated Ustaz Tok Perak (@TokPerak8) in a tweet. “Hadi is rude!”

The post which has since garnered almost 800,000 views and 4,600 likes at the time of writing initially had an ‘ignorant’ netizen suparjoconan (@cortuiso) coming to the defence of the Marang MP by suggesting that the latter “could be down with ill-health, hence should be allowed to rest”.

But such observation only invited a barrage of rebuttal which range from whether the Islamist cleric is still fit to fulfil his responsibility as MP to earning gaji buta (getting paid for doing nothing) given his constant missing in action (MIA) tendency.

Interestingly, a netizen doubted if Hadi is medically unfit given he had only uploaded a lengthy social media post more or less the same time.

Another netizen went on to suggest putting in place a law to penalise MPs who fail to attend parliamentary sessions without valid reasons.

Some blamed the Marang electorate for their faith in Hadi despite “knowing that he’s old and sickly” while some doubted if his physical condition has prevented his movement for “he’s willing to walk for miles for backdoor activities”.

Last but certainly not least, a netizen wonders if the enthusiasm shown by the Islamist party is not just ‘hot air’.

Based on the calendar on the Parliament’s official website, this Parliament sitting will last for 19 days with the main focus to be the debate on the royal address by MPs from Feb 27 to March 7 followed by winding-up by the relevant ministries for four days starting March 11.

Meanwhile, the Dewan Negara sitting will take place from March 18 until April 4. – Feb 27, 2024
