Netizens debate why is ZUS Coffee ostracised when other brands are not

ZUS Coffee’s alleged collaboration with Adidas has sparked a debate among X users. Initially, many were vehemently against the coffee brand, but it appears that most people are tired of boycotting successful local brands.

ZUS faced backlash after serving coffee at an Adidas event amid the problems in the Middle East. A now-deleted Instagram post showed their cups with Adidas branding, sparking criticism.

The brand apologised, clarifying that the giveaway was not a collaboration. They emphasised their commitment to integrity and condemned violence. Despite this, customers were unsatisfied with their stance on the conflict.

ZUS issued a second apology, explicitly supporting a Free Palestine and pledging greater vigilance in future actions.

However, netizens are now asking why the boycott campaign has not widened to companies that are in full collaboration with brands like Adidas. For example, a local store selling sports items is not targeted while it is one of the biggest sellers of Adidas items.

The user specifically mentioned Al Ikhsan as the store in question. Nevertheless, the responses from X users may take the readers by surprise.

A user explained that they do not boycott Apple which they use for selfies for example but would be ready to boycott Adidas for its ‘alleged collaboration’ with the state of Israel.

While ZUS entered into the deal with Adidas recently, a user says, Al Ikhsan has been selling Adidas products for ages and for them, it is okay not to boycott the local store.

One user said it is not the zionists who pay the price when people in Malaysia boycott foreign brands, but, as we all know, it is the locals who work for such companies who are losing jobs. The person also says they do not play into boycotting brands, though.

It is now clear that the sentiment is against all companies that will make fresh deals with Israeli-linked products and brands, but those already wearing the logos of boycotted brands or selling such products for a long time are not the subject of boycotts.

Cherry-picking has thus entered the boycott game. – May 18, 2024
