Netizens defend foreign workers hanging out en masse at KLCC

A VIDEO uploaded of popular shopping and tourist spot KLCC inundated by foreign workers during the Chinese New Year holidays had garnered over 1.3 million views at time of writing and generated a lot of feedback.

The video uploaded on X (formerly known as Twitter) by @ReeNGaston was simply captioned “KLCC Darul Bangla”.

Here are some who seem to echo the sentiments expressed by the poster:

However, the majority of comments on the thread were highly critical of the poster and the inherently racist nature of the post. Many pointed out that these migrant workers, too, had the right to enjoy their day off.

Quite a few chided the poster for displaying the Palestine flag on her avatar and claiming to be “free from prejudice”, yet the post was the complete opposite.

Many also questioned if the poster was exercising selective racism, pointing out that there would have been no issue if KLCC was flooded with Caucasian, Arab or Korean visitors.

Quite a few netizens pointed out that these migrant workers were very diligent and are central to the success of many industries. As some said, they built our homes.

One or two netizens also stated that it was normal for foreigners to visit places of interest when abroad. It was succinctly pointed out that certain destinations like London were also flooded with Malaysians at certain times of the year.

At a time when the presence of migrant workers has become an increasingly hot topic, it is heartening to note that many Malaysians seem to understand that these labourers are here at our behest.

It was also pointed out that it was these foreign workers who were doing 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs that Malaysians themselves are unwilling to do.

While undocumented migrant workers are a real issue in the country, this is not how the problem should be highlighted. It is indeed heartening to see so many netizens call out this poster for her hypocrisy and barely concealed racism.

One netizen put it best where he simply called for equality.
