Netizens skeptical over RM10mil license plate investment yielding only 200 plates daily

THE new license plates for electric vehicles have been questioned by several users on social media. Some users feel they look very similar to the European Union plate numbers.

Others stated that the RM10 million investment placed in the license plate factory is only producing 200 plates a day.

Launched in early September, the plates are produced by Handal Ceria using German technology from Tonnjes International Group.

With a RM 10 million investment, the facility can produce 200 plates daily, available for existing EV owners in November.

However, an X user said they stumbled upon a concessionaire of EV cars displaying the regular black plate number on an EV car.

“I passed by BYD the other day and stopped to have a look. Saw a new EV with a regular black number plate. So the new plate isn’t mandatory? It’s kind of funny. All EVs should be required to have the new white plate.”

This reflects some public sentiment about the inconsistency in implementing the new number plate requirements for electric vehicles (EVs), suggesting that all EVs should uniformly adopt the white plates.

Another user lamented that we are in 2024 and it is only now that the authorities are starting to standardise and regulate the issuance of plate numbers.

Meanwhile, some users did the mathematics on the number of plates produced in a single day, saying it is time-consuming.

Perhaps they should add their voice to the criticism against the heavy investment in a plate-making factory. – Oct 27, 2024
