WHILE the massive fire that destroyed about 90% of Plaza Perabot LDP furniture shop on Jalan SS8/7, Petaling Jaya had long dissipated, the rumours surrounding its occurrence continues to linger like smoke.
In a video posted by a netizen on X, quite a substantial extent of the damage was captured along the road with a quote from the netizen wondering why furniture shops are usually involved in a blaze.

The obvious reason of course points to the fact that having many flammable materials focused in a single area should increase the chance of a fire occurring.
Investigation is underway and the media has yet to make a report on the occurrence. However, a number of netizens have suggested that the fire may not be an accident after all.
According to Yāsir, the flammability of the wooden furniture is not an excuse.
He pointed out to IKEA which has yet to experience any fire and that much can be learned from the Swedish company in terms of management.
Another netizen claimed that people have said that the furniture shop was not doing too well in terms of business, and now suddenly it was on fire, which smelled suspicious.
Netizen JB added that furniture is easy to mark up. If they are able to sell then it is good. Then it was time to take up fire insurance to cover up for the mark up prices.
JB further said that the furniture shop owner may wait for several months, then make a sale before burning things up.
However, basYrio did not buy into this story. According to him, it was not easy to claim fire insurance as the adjuster will make a thorough check.
In fact those people who were once involved in a tragedy involving fire will find it difficult to get another fire insurance due to the lack of approval or it being twice or three times more expensive.
We are with basYrio on this matter. It would take a level of audacity never seen before for a businessman to start such a huge conflagration in the name of profit.
Besides insurance companies are profit-making entities and they are likely to perform their due diligence to ensure that they are not burned by bad actors. But time will tell as the investigation is still underway. – Oct 6, 2024
