New Cheras cluster likely due to visiting over festive season, says Health DG

HEALTH director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah believes the new cluster at an apartment complex in Cheras was likely due to visiting over the festive season.

He noted that the first case was a student at a tahfiz, but contact tracing showed that none of the staff, teachers, or students had a history of attending the Sri Petaling event. However, the six cases involved include the student’s parents and friends, prompting the suspicion that the infection stemmed from visiting others over the festive season.

Following contact tracing, 120 people have been identified and screened, with six positive cases, 76 negative, and 38 still pending results.

Dr Noor Hisham once again reminded Malaysians that the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) is still in effect, and that visiting over the festive season is not allowed.

As of noon today, 66 patients have recovered, bringing the total number discharged to 6,470. 20 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 7,877. Of these, 15 were imported cases and three non-Malaysians, leaving only two local transmission cases involving Malaysians.

The imported cases were Malaysians returning from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Mexico and China.

This leaves 1,292 active transmission cases, of whom six are in intensive care units, with two requiring ventilator support. No deaths were recorded again, keeping the death toll at 115.

On the opening of more economic sectors, Dr Noor Hisham said it is still going to be a controlled easing of the rules in place, depending on the number of cases. The Ministry of Health will continue its vigilance with regards to the number of new cases, and will advise the National Security Council on the situation. – June 2, 2020
