New COVID-19 cases climb past the 2,000 mark post-Raya Aidilfitri

THE number of new COVID-19 cases is back on an upward trend as the celebrations of Raya Aidilfitri comes to an end and people are making their way back to work from their respective hometowns.

As of Monday (May 9) morning, there were 2,153 new cases reported, with two of them being imported cases. This brings the country’s total number of cases to 4,458,889 since the pandemic began.

The number of COVID-19 deaths, however, is still low with only four casualties reported within the last 24 hours, three of which were brought in dead (BID), bringing the death toll to 35,583.

According to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website, 2,869 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the number to a total of 4,400,750 patients discharged since the COVID-19 outbreak started.

The number of hospital beds being used around the country have experienced a slight increase to 55.3%, with the intensive care units (ICUs) at 54.7% capacity.

Currently, 88 people are being treated in ICUs with a majority of them (59) in need of ventilator support.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases in the country is still on a downward trend, standing at 22,556 with 94.7% of them (21,363) being subjected to home quarantine. – May 9, 2022
