New racing circuit in Sarawak? Netizens are ambivalent towards the idea

IT WOULD appear that the Land of the Hornbills will soon be famed for something else besides hornbills. This is a terrible joke because there are many interesting things associated with Sarawak.

But lately, the state has taken the limelight with the announcement of an international race circuit in Gedong Serian.

In a post on X, netizen Hezeri Samsuri said it was a great idea that Borneo may soon be the host to Formula 1.

However, netizens in the cyberspace expressed mixed opinions about this grand project.

One netizen claimed nowadays F1 fans preferred street circuits such as those seen in Miami, Los Angeles, Baku and Singapore.

Another pointed out to the poor public road condition which remained unrepaired or was muddy, yet the Sarawak government is looking to make a racing circuit. His opinion was echoed by many others.

Netizen ابو اكيد لقمان added that a new racing circuit is unnecessary as many F1 fans wanted Sepang to return as the host.

Then here is an interesting open-ended question by Eddot which will undoubtedly serve as food for thought.

To recap, the approval of the racing circuit was confirmed by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, who also announced that the race track could accommodate approximately 100,000 spectators.

The circuit, once completed, is expected to become the second largest racing circuit in Malaysia in terms of capacity.

For comparison, the Sepang International Circuit can accommodate 170,000 spectators at one time.

DayakDaily also quoted the Premier of Sarawak as saying that the circuit will be built on what is called Gedong Ithmus, with 600 acres of land already identified as the site for the circuit. —Dec 10, 2024
