Nga Kor Ming advises Malaysians not to make issue out of ham sandwich: Netizens say it is not so simple

ASK an average Malaysian what are the problems of this great nation and he or she could easily list down stagnating wages, inflation, increasing cost of living, corruption and political instability, and the list goes on.

There are many things we could worry about but it would seem like the best some people could think of are ham sandwiches being purportedly non-halal.

In retaliation to the recent firestorm about KKMart selling ham sandwiches at University Malaya, Nga Kor Ming has since come out to point out the foolishness of this simple issue made complicated.

He further drew attention to root beer which is made from sassafras roots, and not an alcoholic beverage to make a point.

Netizens, however, were divided on his opinion which has raised quite a furore on the cyberspace. Team Nga Kor Ming agreed that the severity of the issue has been inflated beyond proportion.

Then there is netizen TRUTH is never OLD, who decided to place a charming quote in between the firestorm of comments.

Netizen razak aryadi, however, said that the actual issue was the supplier who should not have used a halal sticker.

Meanwhile KK Mart has already suspended all business dealings with said supplier of the pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwich sold at the outlet in University Malaya.

On another note, one netizen said that if the label had been chicken ham, then people would be able to know that it was ham made from chicken meat. He claimed that a product with the “ham” label only can be misleading.

“The word “ham” is generalised for pork meat. Like hamburgers. That’s why in Malaysia we only use “burger,” that is chicken burger, beef burger and fish burger,” he claimed.

Netizen Hazy Rain echoed his sentiment, stating that was it too much to ask for clarity where the ingredients of his meal are concerned?

This is the second time KKMart has inadvertently embroiled itself with the dominant religion in Malaysia, having recently being cleared of the sock issue.

Two KK Mart Concept Stores at University Malaya have since been shut down.

KK Mart also said it had issued a letter of demand on Jan 10 to the supplier through its legal team, David Gurupatham & Koay (Advocates & Solicitors), and filed a police report on Jan 11. —Jan 15, 2025
