Nga trolled by detractors for inability to ascertain BlackRock’s open market buy vs direct nego acquisition

DAP vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming’s national service attempt to showcase that fund manager BlackRock has wide presence in the country since ‘time immemorial’ – even during the 33-month rule of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration – has seemingly come under fire from the hardcore anti-Zionist faction.

“The investment by BlackRock companies is used as a weapon to attack the government,” he ticked off PN backers in a post on the X platform by furnishing a Malaysia Madani data that highlighted 32 Bursa Malaysia-listed companies in which BlackRock held equities ranging from 1.06% (Petronas Dagangan Bhd) to 12% (Public Bank Bhd).

“So, what is the issue? Hypocrite. Hypocrite. Hypocrite. Got it now? 🤔”

In fact, another data attributed to Bloomberg has claimed that BlackRock – touted as the world’s largest asset manager with US$10 tril in assets under management as of end-December 2023 – has an investment valued at RM24.7 bil in Malaysia (RM8 bil in bonds/sukuk holdings and RM18.7 bil in equity holdings).

But statistics alone would not be able to convince detractors who further distinguished between “open market purchases” and “direct negotiation of a stake in MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd)”.

While acknowledging that BlackRock has been present in the country for a long time, another commentator stressed the obligation of Muslims “to block BlackRock’s advances by reducing its interest in Malaysia”.

Interestingly, one pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporter fumed at how UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan who is fondly known as Tok Mat “has attacked the sale of MAHB’s stake to pro-Israel BlackRock through Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP)”.

This is surely a slap in the face for PH given UMNO is currently its biggest ally in the Madani government.

This comes after the party’s ‘renegade’ Khairy Jamaluddin had recently urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to drop BlackRock as an indirect suitor in the MAHB privatisation deal lest he (Anwar) wants to be in cohort in the on-going Gaza genocide by the Israeli forces.

In the meantime, some opposition-slant netizen further described the statement by Nga who is also the Housing and Local Government Minister as “foolish” given that the Madani government has to be consistent in managing the Palestinian issue

At least there was one netizen who distanced herself from religious-related sentiments by questioning BlackRock/GIP’s poor performance in managing the Sydney, Edinburgh and London City airports.  – June 24, 2024
