NATIONAL squash legend Datuk Nicol Ann David expressed her admiration for Malaysian badminton players Thinaah Muralitharan and Pearly Tan after their historic performances at the Tokyo Olympics.
Despite their defeat, Nicol praised their incredible journey and sportsmanship.
“I wish I could say something that could lift your spirits, but I know losing is painful.
“I saw it in your eyes when the match ended, and I knew exactly that heartbreaking feeling of defeat. I know what that feels like and it’s a pain one can struggle to let go.”
Nicol acknowledged the intense challenges the athletes faced.
“Many may not know how hard it was to play at the level you displayed this week, a few weeks ago, you were battling injuries, sickness and frustration but what I admire both about you two is that you have each other’s back and trust each other.”
She emphasised their achievement, saying they both started the Olympics seeded outside the Top 8 in the world, and yet they made history as the first women’s pair to reach the semifinals.
“You made the World No. 1 pair tremble and secure fourth place.”
Moreover, Nicol also highlighted the sportsmanship shown by Thinaah and Pearly.
“When your match ended, you crossed the court and hugged your opponents with love and kindness. That act was gracious, humble, and beautiful. It showed true sportsmanship and will forever define you.”
Describing their performance as a source of national pride, Nicol concluded, “You both are LEGENDS, because you showed Malaysia and the world what values you two are made of, and I for one can’t be more proud.” – Aug 4, 2024
