SETIAWANGSA MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed he will defend his PKR Vice President and Setiawangsa Branch Chief posts in the upcoming party elections.
Announcing his decision during the branch’s annual general meeting, Nik Nazmi emphasised the importance of upholding internal democracy while maintaining unity.
He pledged support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to remain as PKR President and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Deputy President.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has confirmed his plan to contest in the party’s central leadership election on May 24.
However, he has yet to decide which post to contest, prioritising the need to strengthen the party’s unity rather than causing division.
Amirudin revealed he is considering feedback from various parties, with some urging him to retain his current position while others suggest running for a higher post.
He stressed that any decision must align with PKR’s role as a key pillar in the Unity Government.
However, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli is likely to retain his PKR Deputy President post after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed support for him in the upcoming party elections.
Anwar urged for Rafizi to be given an easy path to continue his duties, though he left the decision on contested positions to the party leadership to uphold democracy.
Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim announced he will not contest any leadership positions in PKR, including the Johor PKR chairmanship, to make way for younger leaders.
At 74 years old, Hassan called on veteran leaders to step aside and allow the next generation to lead the party forward. —Mar 2, 2025
