No CNY joy as foreign funds broke 3-week buying streak on Bursa

FOREIGN investors ended their three-week streak of fund inflow into Bursa Malaysia with a cumulative net outflow of -RM160.70 mil during the shortened trading week ended Feb 4 in view of the Chinese New Year (CNY) public holiday.

This compared with a net inflow of RM116.45 mil the preceding week.

“As market reopened on Monday last week (Jan 31), foreign investors and retailers net sold -RM131.68 mil and -RM10.33 mil of local equities respectively,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “Meanwhile, local institutions started the week as net buyers to the tune of RM142.02 mil.”

The largest net selling by foreign investors came on Monday (Jan 31) with the momentum slowing down to -RM19.48 mil on Friday (Feb 4).

Retailers were net sellers for Monday (Jan 31) and Thursday (Feb 3) but turned net buyers on Friday (Feb 4). Their largest net selling took place on Monday (Jan 31) with -RM10.33 mil while their only net buying occurred on Friday (Feb 4) to the tune of RM24.17 mil.

Despite more sessions of selling during the week, retailers net bought RM5.24 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia.

On the other hand, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly net buying amounting to RM155.47 mil.

They were net buyers for majority of the trading sessions last week except on Friday (Feb 4) when they recorded a net outflow of -RM4.69 mil. Their largest net buying on Monday (Jan 31) came to RM142.02 mil.

In terms of market participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -17.66%, -33.24% and 2.90% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Malaysia is the only market which recorded a net outflow at -USD38.40 mil while Indonesia topped the inflow list with US$107.96 mil followed by Thailand (US$68.79 mil) and the Philippines (US$8.15 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd (RM1.94 mil), CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (RM1.64 mil) and MISC Bhd (RM1.57 mil). – Feb 7, 2021
