No political coup against Anwar with firm GPS backing

SARAWAK Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg reaffirmed Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, dismissing attempts to unseat him before his term ends.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, Abang Johari questioned the need for such a move, urging dissatisfied parties to wait for the next general election instead of pursuing a political coup.

“Why (is there a) need to replace him (Anwar) when his term has not ended yet?” he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

“If people are not happy with us (coalition government), then (they should) wait for the general election. But at this moment, don’t (force change),” he added.

His comments follow claims by Perak Opposition leader Razman Zakaria of Perikatan Nasional’s plans to form a backdoor government.

Rumours also suggest PAS is courting UMNO, though UMNO recently withdrew from organising a rally for Najib ahead of his Court of Appeal hearing regarding a royal addendum. GPS, with 23 MPs in Parliament, plays a crucial role in the federal government’s stability. — Jan 11, 2025
