Omicron wave: Provide solutions not just warnings, Zahid tells Muhyiddin

THE National Recovery Council (NRC) should be more aggressive in providing effective solutions on how we can contain the Omicron wave instead of just issuing warnings, said UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“This is your responsibility. NRC chairperson Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should not be relying on the Government alone for advice.

“So far, we have yet to hear new ideas from Muhyiddin in dealing with the Omicron wave. I believe he could do way more in this, in terms of providing leadership and new initiatives,” he said, in a Facebook post.

With the Omicron wave hitting Malaysian shores, daily infection cases have soared to new highs, with 20,818 cases recorded yesterday.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had urged to the public to get their booster shots as soon as possible. Those who do not take the booster shots would lose their fully vaccinated status by March 1.

Senior Minister (International Trade and Industries) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali had also warned businesses to adhere to COVID-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) strictly to avoid another round of shutdown.

On that note, Zahid urged Muhyiddin to direct his team in being more active by providing ideas and advise the Government on how to convince Malaysians to get their booster shots, which is receiving lukewarm response from the public.

“We should also look into the problem of getting schools and universities to reopen amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

“As for the reopening our borders, can Muhyiddin tell us how we can reopen gradually without skyrocketing the number of cases while rejuvenating the economy at the same time?’ the former deputy prime minister queried.

With that, the Bagan Datuk MP urged Muhyiddin to look into the matter urgently and not use the Johor state election as an excuse to be derelict in his duties to the country.

“The more we adopt the wait and see approach, the more we will lose out,” Zahid remarked. – Feb 12, 2022
