Opposition MPs may belong to B40 income group, claims PAS official

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari suggested that MPs from the opposition ranks could potentially fall into Malaysia’s bottom 40 (B40) income group due to the absence of allocations.

While no formal research has been conducted by PAS on this issue, Ahmad Fadhli contends that it’s conceivable for opposition MPs to face financial challenges particularly as they often have to personally finance constituency expenses.

“We also know that the government MPs receive an annual allocation of RM3.8 mil, whereas opposition MPs receive nothing,” added the Pasir Mas MP.

Moreover, this assertion comes amidst Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent remarks regarding objections voiced by some MPs against the targeted subsidies and pension scheme restructuring proposed by the government.

Anwar criticised those opposing the rationalisation of subsidies alleging that some had openly admitted to being part of the B40 income group despite earning significant incomes.

Furthermore, the Economy Ministry has announced its intention to present a revised targeted subsidy plan to the Cabinet later this month. Anwar had previously announced in January a review of the pension scheme, which would also affect politicians.

However, the proposed restructuring of the pension scheme has sparked mixed reactions including among elected representatives. Some MPs have expressed reservations or concerns regarding the proposed changes. – April 3, 2024
